How We Are Funded

ELUA relies on small donations from individuals, many of whom are middle-class voters. We use a mix of donations, memberships and targeted project funding.

Use of Funds

Donations to ELUA are used primarily for educational outreach, advocacy and operational expenses.

Our primary educational initiative is the Engage! public awareness campaign. Most people are completely unaware that Sacramento has severely limited local control of residential development, replacing it with a statewide one-size-fits-all approach that mandates high-density development. These state laws favor developer profits over community wellbeing. This trend is accelerating and it will destroy Carlsbad as we know and love it. Our objective with the Engage! campaign is to raise awareness of the problem and encourage action to correct the situation.

Our advocacy efforts include working with groups statewide on a constitutional amendment to return local control of housing decisions. We lobby in support of good housing legislation and oppose unfair housing bills. We encourage good housing policy in Carlsbad and actively oppose development projects that are inconsistent with the General Plan. We track the voting records of elected officials and endorse candidates who will work to establish good housing policy that’s in the best interest of their constituents.

Contributions to our organization are used maximally for the benefit of the community. We are a volunteer organization and do not have a physical office or paid staff. Our current operating budget is less than $200 per month.
